Sawyer is the systems-minded designer of the Infinity Engine tradition, and his push to crowdfund Pillars of Eternity helped launch the 2010s revival of the classic isometric CRPG.
Life
Joshua Eric Sawyer was born on October 18, 1975, in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, the son of Linda Sawyer and the sculptor Gerald P. Sawyer. He went to Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, initially as a voice student, and ended up majoring in history with a minor in theatre; in his junior year he directed a production of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins. On the side he taught himself web design and Adobe Flash, skills that pointed him toward the game industry after graduation. History, though, never left him, and it runs through his games, from the Roman-flavored Caesar's Legion of Fallout: New Vegas to the early-modern Bavaria of Pentiment.
Work
Sawyer joined Black Isle Studios, Interplay Productions's role-playing division, in 1999 as a web designer. He moved quickly into design, working as a designer on Icewind Dale (2000) and its expansion Heart of Winter (2001), whose story he suggested building on lore Chris Avellone had written for one of the base game's quests. He was lead designer of Icewind Dale II (2002), a party-based Forgotten Realms adventure on BioWare's Infinity Engine that adopted the new third-edition D&D rules, and he is remembered at Black Isle for inventing its "Ex-Presidents" project code-naming scheme.
He then became lead designer of Van Buren, Black Isle's attempt at a third Fallout, alongside Avellone. Interplay's collapse doomed it: Sawyer left in November 2003, and Black Isle was shut down two weeks later. After a stint on Midway's Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows, he joined Obsidian Entertainment, the studio founded by Black Isle veterans, in July 2005, where his first major role was as lead designer of Neverwinter Nights 2 (2006).
At Obsidian he became the studio's leading systems designer. He was project director and lead designer of Fallout: New Vegas (2010), Bethesda-published but built by Obsidian, a game later celebrated for its factional politics and reactivity; he also directed its Honest Hearts expansion and was a lead systems designer across its other add-ons. Characteristically, he released his own "JSawyer" mod rebalancing the game to his tastes. He directed the Sega-published Aliens: Crucible until its cancellation, part of a string of publisher setbacks that left Obsidian near financial disaster by 2012.
That year Sawyer made the pitch that changed the company's fortunes. There was, he argued, a market for an isometric party-based RPG in the style of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, and players could fund it directly through Kickstarter without a publisher. Leadership agreed. Project Eternity's campaign, launched on September 14, 2012, reached its $1.1 million goal in about a day and closed with more than $3.9 million, then a Kickstarter record for a video game. Released in 2015 with Sawyer as project director and lead designer, Pillars of Eternity used Real-time with pause combat, a new world of souls and reincarnation, and meticulous class design. He directed its sequel, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire (2018), also crowdfunded, as director and narrative designer.
Sawyer's next project was a departure. Pentiment (2022), a narrative adventure RPG inspired by the world of German Renaissance artists such as Albrecht Dürer, follows the young artist Andreas through a murder mystery in a 16th-century Bavarian abbey town, and is drawn in the style of manuscript illumination and woodcut printing. Released on November 15, 2022, for Xbox and Windows, it was widely praised by critics. Sawyer serves as Obsidian's studio design director.
Legacy
Sawyer's career follows the whole arc of the Infinity Engine tradition, from its first flowering at Black Isle to its crowdfunded rebirth. Pillars of Eternity, alongside inXile's Wasteland 2 and Larian's Divinity: Original Sin, proved that fans would fund the kind of game publishers had abandoned, a movement related to the tabletop crowdfunding boom of the same years and a direct precursor to the renewed popularity of party-based RPGs in Baldur's Gate 3.
He is also known for discussing his design reasoning openly with players, and for games in which mechanics, history and theme are tightly bound. For visitors to this museum he represents the scholar-craftsman of the CRPG: a history graduate who made role-playing games argue with the past.
