Life
Rebecca Yarros was born on April 13, 1981. She studied European history and English at Troy University, and she began writing while her husband was deployed to Afghanistan. Their family has been shaped by both military life and caregiving. As of October 2023 the couple had six children, including a daughter they fostered and later adopted, who is nonverbal and autistic, and in 2019 they co-founded OneOctober, a nonprofit that works to improve the lives of children in foster care. Yarros lives with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a genetic connective-tissue disorder that her sons share, and she has woven that experience into her fiction. She is a fan of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, which planned a Fourth Wing Night for a November 2025 home game.
Work
Yarros spent nearly a decade as a prolific contemporary romance writer before turning to fantasy. Her Flight & Glory series (from 2014), the Renegades trilogy, and standalones such as The Last Letter (2019), which Kirkus named one of the year's best books, Great and Precious Things (2020) and The Things We Leave Unfinished (2021), built a devoted readership, many of them with Entangled Publishing.
When Entangled announced a new romantic-fantasy imprint, Red Tower Books, she pitched five ideas. The publisher chose the one set in the world she called the Empyrean. Fourth Wing (2023) follows twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail, raised to be a scribe, whose mother, the commanding general of Basgiath War College in the kingdom of Navarre, forces her into the lethal Riders Quadrant. There cadets must survive a brutal curriculum, rival cadets and the dragons themselves, who choose, and sometimes kill, their riders. Violet's small, easily injured body, drawn from Yarros's own condition, makes survival a matter of cunning rather than strength. Her enemies-to-lovers romance with Xaden Riorson, son of an executed rebel, drives the book, while the secrets Navarre's leaders are keeping expand it into epic fantasy. Iron Flame (November 2023) and Onyx Storm (January 2025) followed, and Yarros has said the series will run to five books.
Legacy
Fourth Wing's success was immediate and enormous. Driven by BookTok, where its hashtags gathered more than a billion combined views, it reached No. 1 on the New York Times list, sold more than two million copies in its first six months, and by August 2024 had spent 65 weeks on the list. Iron Flame became Waterstones' fastest-selling one-day preorder, and Onyx Storm sold more than 2.7 million copies in its first week. Critics and readers have credited the series with popularizing Romantasy, the blend of romance and fantasy that Sarah J. Maas's A Court of Thorns and Roses had built a mass audience for.
Her dragons also place her in a long line. The bond between rider and dragon, the idea of dragons choosing their humans, and the military training of riders recall Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern, retold for a generation that met fantasy through social video rather than paperback racks. On screen, Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society acquired rights to the whole series in October 2023, with Yarros and Entangled's Liz Pelletier as executive producers; after changes of showrunner, Prime Video greenlit the series in May 2026. The short-story collection Threshing Day extended the Empyrean in 2026.
