## Overview

*The Legend of Vox Machina* is an adult animated fantasy series on Prime Video. It adapts the first campaign of [Critical Role](https://www.lanternhall.org/culture/critical-role/), the web series in which a group of professional voice actors play *Dungeons & Dragons* on camera with [Matthew Mercer](https://www.lanternhall.org/makers/matthew-mercer/) as Dungeon Master. It premiered on 28 January 2022 with the same seven players voicing their own characters. A crowdfunding campaign launched it, Amazon made it a franchise, and it became the first major television adaptation of an [Actual Play](https://www.lanternhall.org/atlas/actual-play/) game. It is violent and profane, and it treats its ragtag [The party](https://www.lanternhall.org/lexicon/party/) with real affection.

## Origins

The source was a home game. Mercer began running a campaign for his voice-actor friends, first in [Pathfinder](https://www.lanternhall.org/works/pathfinder-rpg/), and moved it to [D&D fifth edition](https://www.lanternhall.org/works/dnd-5th-edition/) when Geek & Sundry began streaming it as *Critical Role* in March 2015. The first campaign ran for 115 episodes, most of them three to six hours long, before it ended in 2017. By then it had become the center of the [The Actual-Play Boom](https://www.lanternhall.org/culture/actual-play-boom/).

In March 2019 the cast launched a Kickstarter asking for $750,000 to make one 22-minute animated special. It passed $1 million in under an hour, cleared every stretch goal within a day, and closed on 19 April with $11,385,449 from 88,887 backers. That made it the most funded film or TV project the platform had seen, and the best-known example of the [crowdfunding](https://www.lanternhall.org/culture/crowdfunding-tabletop/) power of tabletop fandom. The money paid for ten episodes. In November 2019 Amazon acquired the series, added two episodes to the first season and ordered a second season of twelve. Titmouse animates the show and Brandon Auman is showrunner, with the cast serving as executive producers through their company Metapigeon.

## The story

Vox Machina is a band of mercenaries on the continent of Tal'Dorei in Mercer's world of Exandria. Its members are the twin half-elves Vex'ahlia and Vax'ildan (Laura Bailey and Liam O'Brien), the gunslinging aristocrat Percival de Rolo (Taliesin Jaffe), the cleric Pike (Ashley Johnson), the druid Keyleth (Marisha Ray), the bard Scanlan (Sam Riegel) and the goliath barbarian Grog (Travis Willingham). Mercer voices Vex's bear Trinket and many villains. Season one opens with two original episodes and then adapts the Briarwood arc. Percy seeks revenge on the vampire Sylas and the necromancer Delilah Briarwood, the nobles who murdered his family and took his home city of Whitestone. Season two covers the Chroma Conclave, four [chromatic dragons](https://www.lanternhall.org/bestiary/dragon/) that sack the capital city of Emon. The third season (October 2024) finishes that war. The fourth (June 2026) begins a year later, with the scattered heroes brought back together to face an ancient evil. Amazon has ordered a fifth and final season. The show keeps the feel of the table: jokes, quarrels and sudden deaths alongside real grief.

## Reception & impact

Critics received the first four seasons very well, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 100 percent for each season. The show proved that a tabletop campaign, played over years and hundreds of hours, could be cut down into a tightly plotted animated epic. The record Kickstarter changed how studios counted fantasy audiences, because the fans were visibly willing to pay in advance.

## Legacy

Amazon followed with a second series, *The Mighty Nein*, which adapts Critical Role's second campaign and premiered on 19 November 2025. With [Stranger Things](https://www.lanternhall.org/works/stranger-things/) and the 2023 film [Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves](https://www.lanternhall.org/works/honor-among-thieves/), *Vox Machina* was part of a moment when D&D became a subject for mainstream entertainment rather than a punchline. It also shows the shape of the [Actual Play](https://www.lanternhall.org/atlas/actual-play/) form: a story improvised by players and a Dungeon Master, with dice deciding what happens, retold in animation as a scripted epic.
