## Life

Joseph Edward Abercrombie was born on December 31, 1974, in Lancaster, in the north of England. He went to Lancaster Royal Grammar School and studied psychology at the University of Manchester, where he first sketched the story that would become his debut. He has been an avid video game player since childhood. In an interview with *Edge* he credited games as a major influence: early text adventures, historical strategy games such as *Civilization* and *Age of Empires*, and favorites including *Elite*, FTL's [Dungeon Master](https://www.lanternhall.org/works/dungeon-master/), *Street Fighter II* and *Red Dead Redemption*.

After starting out making tea at a television production company, he became a freelance film editor. The irregular schedule gave him time to write, and he has continued to work in editing and screenwriting alongside fiction. He and his wife, Lou, live in England.

## Work

Abercrombie wrote *The Blade Itself* from 2002 to 2004. After a year of rejections, Gillian Redfearn at Gollancz acquired it in 2005 in a five-figure deal, and it appeared in 2006, followed by *Before They Are Hanged* (2007) and *Last Argument of Kings* (2008). [The First Law](https://www.lanternhall.org/works/the-first-law/) looks at first like [High / Epic Fantasy](https://www.lanternhall.org/atlas/high-fantasy/): an ancient wizard, Bayaz, gathers a party of misfits for a quest to the edge of the world. But the misfits are Logen Ninefingers, a weary Northman with a berserker's bloody past; Sand dan Glokta, a crippled war hero turned torturer and the series' sardonic conscience; and Jezal dan Luthar, a vain fencing champion. The quest fails, the wizard turns out to be manipulating everyone, and the victory at the end is merely a new arrangement of power. The tone mixes brutal violence with dry comedy and sharp character voices, and its famous refrain, "you have to be realistic about these things," became a kind of motto.

He extended the world with standalone novels in different genres: the revenge thriller *Best Served Cold* (2009), the three-day battle novel *The Heroes* (2011) and the western *Red Country* (2012). The *Shattered Sea* trilogy, beginning with *Half a King* (2014), was written for younger readers and set in a Viking-influenced world. *The Age of Madness* trilogy (2019–21) moved the First Law world into an industrial revolution. In 2022 Tor bought a new series at auction; its first volume, *The Devils*, a band of monsters and villains sent on a mission for a corrupt church, was published in May 2025.

## Legacy

Abercrombie is one of the defining names of [Grimdark](https://www.lanternhall.org/atlas/grimdark/), a label borrowed from the tagline of [Games Workshop](https://www.lanternhall.org/houses/games-workshop/)'s *Warhammer 40,000* ("in the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war") and applied to morally bleak, cynical fantasy. He embraced it with humor, adopting "Lord Grimdark" as an online handle. His books sit alongside [George R. R. Martin](https://www.lanternhall.org/makers/george-r-r-martin/)'s as models for fantasy that interrogates heroism instead of celebrating it, and in which war is logistics, politics and trauma rather than glory.

The link to games runs both ways. The First Law's focus on sieges, supply and the view from the ranks owes something to the strategy games he grew up with, and its party of mismatched, self-interested adventurers resembles the kind of group many [tabletop](https://www.lanternhall.org/atlas/tabletop-rpg/) campaigns produce in practice. On screen, he has written for Netflix's animated anthology *Love, Death & Robots*: "Mason's Rats" in season three and the adaptations "Spider Rose" and "Golgotha" in season four. In June 2025 James Cameron's production company acquired *The Devils*, with Cameron and Abercrombie planning to write the screenplay together after *Avatar: Fire and Ash*.
